The beloved author Charles Dickens was full halfway through the creation of the greatest mystery of our time when he committed the one ungenerous deed of his noble career…he died! Now, the audience is left with the chance to finish the story that Dickens never did and decide the fate of the characters of Drood. We pose the age-old question that audiences never tire of answering: whodunit?
The voting does not stop at the infamous question of who slew Edwin Drood; audience members also give their pick for who has disguised himself as the mysterious Dick Datchery as well as which two characters are the secret lovers of that performance. This means that with each passing show, our actors put on a completely different ending. With all of these decisions to make, there is quite a bit for the actors to rehearse. The cast of the show is prepared to perform one of over five HUNDRED possible combinations of the show’s ending at a moment’s notice!
Upon its Broadway premiere in 1985, Drood was groundbreaking from the start as it was the first ever Broadway musical of its kind to end differently each night depending on the votes of the audience. It went on to win an incredibly impressive five Tony Awards (and eleven nominations) in the same year including Best Musical. Complete with song, dance, and plenty of laughs, this show is not to be missed at Spring Lake Theatre Company! So far, we have seen Princess Puffer and Reverend Crisparkle as the killers in our production…come see us this weekend or next to decide for yourself!
